Promise for the Future Report

The Transitions RTC is a national effort that aims to improve the supports for youth and young adults, ages 14-30, with serious mental health conditions who are trying to successfully complete their schooling and training and move into rewarding work lives.

They just released a report called Promise for the Future that examines various federal programs that can provide assistance in meeting the educational, vocational and basic supports needs of youth and young adults (from ages 16 to 30) with serious mental health conditions (SMHCs). It briefly examines the breadth and scope of available assistance and offers recommendations to improve state, local and federal policy.
The information is intended for a diverse audience including policymakers, those assisting youth and young adults (family members and professionals), and individuals and groups that advocate for improved public policy.

Witness to the Dark

A new book by our own Bob Larsted, Witness to the Dark: My Daughter’s Troubled Times. A Comedy of Emotions, tells the roller coaster ride of his daughter’s battle with sadness, cutting, and suicide attempts; depression, bipolar, and schizoaffective disorders. Mix in a little OCD, a lot of anxiety, and share their journey through the minefield of school, family, and today’s healthcare system as he searches to understand her darkness and helps her find ways to survive – and thrive – with psychosis.

Welcome

Like with most things in life, we start with very little. Larsted.com begins with three things: a tagline, a picture, and with something else, too.

Our tagline wants to believe that this is “a welcoming place for families struggling with mental health.”

Our picture shows not only a road, but also a journey of many parts. I’m never sure where we are in this scene, but I do know that it changes every day. Sometimes we make it a little way along; other days we lose some ground. Mostly, we spend a lot of time lost in the woods along the sides.

As the Wizard might say in the story of Oz, the third thing we have — that not everyone else has — is knowledge. We’ve learned a lot. Some of it works. Much of it doesn’t. This website is an place to share some of the things we have found helpful on our long road.

Join us in our journey.

Books

Libraries, bookstores and Amazon.com are filled with thousands of books about mental health. I used to think that if I searched hard enough, I’d find the one with the story that mirrored what was going on with my kid. Then I’d flip to the end, see what they did to fix everything, and we’d be done.

It hasn’t worked out quite that way.

I have found a few books that I have  been able to relate to. I will share them here.
